New variant of COVID-19
In response to the discovery of a new variant of COVID-19, the federal government of Canada is implementing a travel ban in several countries in South Africa, including South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini. In addition to Canada, the European Union, Israel, Japan, India and Britain have all imposed travel bans on many South African countries. The restrictions were implemented following the discovery of a new variant of COVID-19 in South Africa. South African Minister of Health Joe Phaahla said: âInitially it looked like cluster epidemics, but as of yesterday our scientists at the Genomic Surveillance Network have indicated that they are seeing a new variant. .
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the new variant identified in South Africa, named “Omicron”, as a “variant of concern”. WHO considers the new variants to be either an âinteresting variantâ or a âworrying variantâ, the latter being the more serious of the two. In addition, a statement released by the WHO on Friday said that “this variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are of concern” and that the evidence gathered so far indicates that the variant has a higher risk of reinfection than the other variants.
