GenCell Energy, Simtel and Vodafone Deploy GenCell FOX™ Field Test at Mobile Site in Romania

A zero-emission, ammonia-based off-grid power solution was installed at a Vodafone mobile site in Romania to demonstrate the performance and cost-saving potential of the technology

BUCHAREST, Romania and PETAH TIKVA, Israel, August 30, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — GenCell Energy(TASE: GNCL), a leading provider of hydrogen and ammonia fuel solutions and The SIMTEL team (SMTL), the Romanian market leader in rooftop photovoltaic (PV) power plant solutions, service provider for the telecommunications segment and an EPCM company listed on the AeRO market of the Bucharest Stock Exchange, has deployed an off-grid system ammonia-based GenCell FOX™ power solution field test at a mobile telecommunications tower site in Romania, operated by Vodafone.

The GenCell FOX is a low-temperature alkaline fuel cell that generates power from liquid ammonia – one of the most efficient and energy-dense carbon-free hydrogen carriers – with only water, nitrogen and heat as by-products. The solution was designed to meet strict zero-emissions sustainability goals, provide resilient continuous power 24/7, even in harsh weather conditions, and minimize operating expenses through the use inexpensive and widely available liquid ammonia.

Liquid ammonia is less flammable than gasoline, propane, hydrogen, or natural gas and has a strong odor that makes leaks quickly detectable. When handled according to regulations and proper equipment, liquid ammonia achieves excellent safety records. Composed of nitrogen and hydrogen, ammonia is carbon-free, and thanks to the wide availability of existing infrastructure, growing market demand and technological developments, ammonia is an increasingly green energy carrier. more profitable.

GenCell follows strict procedures for the safe handling of ammonia. Its equipment incorporates built-in sensors that will immediately stop the operation of the fuel cell as soon as any leak is detected. The GenCell FOX™ is an off-grid product that is designed for placement in locations away from urban areas and requires minimal maintenance and on-site servicing.

The objective of the field test was to assess the performance, resilience and savings potential of the ammonia-based power solution over a six-week period. Initial test results indicate that the system performed reliably, providing the required output power for the entire test period. The system operated autonomously and minimal intervention from GenCell personnel was required. After demonstrating the solution’s resilient and reliable performance, Vodafone will present it to various business units.

Rami Reshef, CEO of GenCell, said, “GenCell is seeing substantial interest in its solutions in the telecommunications sector, particularly in Europe where regulations are tightening against carbon emissions. Alkaline fuel cell technology can help operators implement renewable energy solutions directly to mobile networks. sites, even when located in remote locations and in the harshest climatic conditions.”

Radu Villau, CTO and co-founder of Simtel, said, “We understand the tough energy challenges faced by our MNO customers. After testing GenCell’s FOX for more than 1,200 continuous hours under varying power loads at a live telecom site, we are confident that the GenCell FOX Standalone Power Solution can offer a solution to these challenges, maintaining remote mobile towers in continuous operation while complying with increasingly strict European regulations regarding the use of fossil fuels. Following this successful field test, we plan to explore further joint project deployment opportunities between Simtel and GenCell.
