During the first full week of October, Yankton celebrates the strength and resilience of our manufacturing industry with South Dakota Manufacturing Week (October 2-8).
In South Dakota, the manufacturing industry is an important source of employment and income, with 43,131 workers (12.5% ââof all workers) and contributes 13.5% of the payroll of private establishments in the state.
The manufacturing industry plays an even bigger role in Yankton County. Yankton continues to stand out for its resilience to create a thriving economy. Manufacturing is one of the four main industries that contributes to Yankton’s diverse economy. Industrialists in the region employ 30.8% of workers who receive 35.9% of the wage bill for private employment. In Yankton County, the manufacturing industry has grown 3.8% over the past five years.
A manufacturing committee – with representatives from RTEC (Regional Center for Technical Education), the Department of Labor and Regulation, numerous manufacturers and Yankton Thrive – worked on a comprehensive list of events to showcase the wide variety locally made products that have a global impact. The manufacturing community, which includes over 20 local employers, encourages our great Yankton community to connect with them and learn who they are. The following events are planned:
⢠Saturday, October 2, 10 am to 1 pm – Help support the MMU community and celebrate local manufacturing at a family event. Next, head to Crane-Youngworth Field to cheer on the Lancers in the 1 p.m. football game against Northwestern College.
⢠Throughout the week, manufacturers partner with guidance counselors to share information with students at Yankton High School. Fun facts will engage students in an exciting trivia game with prizes.
⢠Thursday October 7 from 11 am to 1 pm: USD Student Center in Vermillion. Yankton Manufacturers will connect with USD students to share information about the many growing and rewarding careers in manufacturing.
A Facebook and Twitter campaign will highlight Yankton’s manufacturers and their finished products. For more information on SD Manufacturing Week and events taking place in Yankton, visit www.yanktonsd.com/manufacturing.
